We all know that during this quarantine, time can be long and we can get bored easily. That’s why today I prepared a list of 5 Korean drama, each from fantasy genre but still very different, so you can find one that suits your tastes.
Korean Odyssey (화유기)
First let’s start with the fantasy drama Korean Odyssey which is a modern adaptation of the Chinese novel “Journey to the West”. Seon Mi (Oh Yeon Seo), the main characer, is a young girl cursed with the ability to see ghosts. She encountered Woo Ma-Wang (Cha Seung Won), the Bull Demon, as she was going home from school as a child. After saving her from a ghost, he asks her to enter a house and bring him back a fan. There, she will meet Son Oh Gong (Lee Seung-Gi), the Monkey King, who promises to come protect her each time she would call his name in exchange for setting him free from the house where he is held imprisoned. Once he makes a promise or a deal with a human, he can never break it and has to abide by it. However, he steals the memory of his name from her as soon as he is out, and she will only meet him again 25years later.
The amount of comedy and romance was well balanced in this drama and there are many interesting side stories. If you’re into fantasy drama, this one is a must-watch.
Dazzling / The Light in your eyes (눈이 부시게)
Here is another fantasy drama, but not in the same way as the previous one. Kim Hye-Ja (Han Ji-Min&Kim Hye-Ja), a positive and joyful 26 years old who wishes to become an announcer, has found a way to manipulate time. However things get complicated when she suddenly turns 70 years old. Lee Joon-ha (Nam Joo-hyuk) was once a passionate man willing to become a reporter but gave up everything to live a hopeless life. The drama unfold the story of 2 characters, one willing to live her life to the fullest but gets all her time taken away from her, and one giving up everything when his whole life is still ahead of him.
You might think that this drama is a typical rom-com at first, but it goes way further than that. It portrays the everyday hardships everyone may face and will give you a roller-coaster of emotions. Get the box tissue ready for this one!
The Beauty Inside (뷰티 인사이드)
This drama from 2018 is based on the 2015 movie of the same name. Han Se-Gye (Seo Hyun-Jin), a top star actress, is known for being a troublemaker and always having mysterious rumours around her. The truth is: her entire physical appearance change every month for a week. She is trying hard to keep it a secret from everyone, but everything changes as she meet Seo Do-Jae (Lee Min-Ki), an executive director at an airline company who seems to have it all. However, he also has a secret : he suffers from Prosopagnosia, making him unable to recognize people’s faces. Their lives begin to change when they meet one another, as Han Se-Gye is the only person Seo Do-Jae can recognize.
This drama caught the attention of many thanks to its story and cast, and most people were not disappointed. Even if it follows the cliche storyline of the chaebol falling in love with the girl leading a hard life, it also deals with other problems such as self acceptance, the importance of inner beauty and most of all: self-love.
Hit the Top (최고의 한방)
Next is the drama named “Hit the Top” or “The Best Hit”. It aired from June to July 2017 on KBS2. It tells the story of Yoo Hyun Jae (Yoon Si-Yoon), a famous idol in 1993 who accidentally travel time to 2017. Discovering that he disappeared in 1994 and is presumed dead, he will try to find out the reason behind his disappearance while trying to adjust to the modern world, where everything is very different from 1993. Indeed, in the future, his past girlfriend has now a son, Lee Ji-Hoon (Kim Min-Jae), secretly enrolled as an idol trainee at a big entertainment company. He is the first person meeting Yoo Hyun Jae in 2017. Other main characters are played by Lee Se-Young, Dong Hyun-Bae and Cha Tae-Yoon.
This drama is a story of love, passion and friendship among people in their 20s in the entertainment industry. It is a simple drama with comedy and romance, you won’t need to focus or think too much while watching it, making it perfect if you are just looking for something to laugh at or to watch with other people. It’s refreshing and unpredictable, unlike many other Korean dramas, and will definitely cheer you up during the quarantine.
My Only Love Song (마이 온리 러브송)
The last drama on this list is ‘My only love song’. This Netflix-produced drama is a mix of historical/fantasy and romance genre. Similarly with the previous one, it is a simple drama that will cheer you up and make you laugh. Song Soo-Jung (Gong Seung-hyeon), an arrogant top-star, always judge people depending on the money or status they have. When things don’t go the way she wants during a shooting for an historical drama, she runs away in an old van taking her on a time travelling journey to the Goguryeo era. There, she becomes a nobody and meet On Dal (Lee Jong-hyun), a man willing to do everything to get money but in reality very generous to the ones in need.
This show is a lot on the comedy side, with a lighthearted and cute story. It is a good way to entertain your quarantine days.
