Choi Jong-beom, who was handed over to trial for assaulting and intimidating the late singer-actor Goo Hara, sued netizens for making malicious comments on him.

According to a media outlet on the 21st, Choi filed a complaint with the police against dozens of netizens on charges of defamation and insults when a comment that insulted himself, the accused, was posted in an article related to his appeal in June.

Mr. Choi’s lawyer said, “Mr. Choi was under extreme stress as a bad article about Mr. Choi went out. Also, to protest, many people visited the beauty salon operated by Mr. Choi and eventually closed the door.”

Meanwhile, in September 2018, Choi was investigated by the police for assaulting Goo Hara and each other at Goo Hara’s house in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Afterwards, Goo Hara filed an additional suspicion of coercion, intimidation, and violation of the Sexual Crime Penalty Act, saying that Choi transmitted and threatened ‘revenge porn’. Goo Hara was prosecuted for assault crimes, and Choi was indicted without custody on charges of violating the special law (shooting using cameras, etc.) on blackmail, coercion, injury, property damage, and punishment of sexual violence crimes.

In the appeal trial conducted last month, Choi was sentenced to one year imprisonment, imprisoned in court, and is currently being held in a detention center. However, both the prosecution and Mr. Choi appealed, leaving the final judgment of the Supreme Court.
