BTS, Yoo Jae-seok, Bong Joon-ho… CJ ENM, selected as ‘2020 Visionary’ 10 people

On the 3rd, CJ ENM (CEO Heo Min-hoe) announced on the 3rd that it has selected ‘2020 Visionary’, 10 people who inspired the global public with pioneering achievements in the Korean pop culture world this year.

CJ ENM has led the change and innovation in the entertainment industry over the past year through recommendations and big data analysis of cultural critics and industry trend experts targeting artists and creators who have been active in all fields of Korean pop culture such as broadcasting, movies, music, and performances. 10 icons were selected and named as ‘Visionary’ which means ‘prophet’. CJ ENM plans to highlight the achievements and insights of 10 people selected for the ‘2020 Visionary’ through various promotions such as video of its channel campaign in the future.

In ‘Visionary’, which was first released this year, (in alphabetical order) Kim Eun-hee, Kim Tae-ho PD, Park Ji-eun writer, singer BTS, film director Bong Joon-ho, singer BLACKPINK, singer and actor Rain, actor Song Kang-ho, Shin Won-ho PD, broadcaster Yoo Jae-seok were awarded.

Although 2020 is a crisis of low growth due to the pandemic in all industries, Korean pop culture has emerged as the mainstream around the world and is also a monumental year that showed a vision for the future. As a global entertainment company representing Asia, CJ ENM selected ‘Visionary’ to highlight the achievements of symbolic figures who took the lead in promoting Korean culture to the world, and to present future directions through this.

The 10 people selected for the ‘2020 Visionary’ are said to have led the industry trend with their unique actions in their respective fields beyond just topicality. First, PD Won-ho Shin, who raised the status of cable drama with the series ‘Reply’, uses conditions far from the box office, such as casting with potential actors and the genre of human dramas, and continues to ‘shrewd life’ and ‘discreet doctor life’. It received high praise for being successful at the box office.

PD Kim Tae-ho, who has been leading the popularization of non-mainstream since the days of ‘Infinite Challenge’, said, ‘How do you play?’ By creating the main character and sub character syndrome, they showed the infinite expandability of entertainment, and broadcaster Yoo Jae-seok was able to cross new characters every time in ‘How do you play?’, as well as confirm the strength of empathy and solidarity through ‘Yoo Quiz on the Block’. Once again, he established himself as an entertainer.

In the drama ‘Crash Landing of Love’, the protagonist who re-spread the 4th Korean Wave boom in Japan by drawing the special situation of the division of North and South with romance, and the protagonist of the K-drama Hallyu craze around the world, Park Ji-eun and the most Korean zombie. Each artist Kim Eun-hee of ‘Kingdom’ who led the genre was included.

After last year’s Cannes Film Festival, director Bong Joon-ho finally swept the academy with ‘Parasite’ this year, showing the possibility of Korean cinema. Actor Song Kang-ho, who has been named in a number of films that have been recognized for both workability and popularity, is the 45th time as ‘Parasite’. He won the LA Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actor Award and the 26th American Actors Guild Award Ensemble Award, and was recognized for his acting skills in Hollywood.

BLACKPINK and BTS, Korean bands swept the Billboard charts and showed the expanded power of K-pop with contents utilizing the worldview, are rapidly expanding MZ generation customized contents such as games and social avatars based on global fandom. As for Rain, he positively accepted that his song ‘Kang’ was reinterpreted as a digital play culture ‘meme’, and received an explosive response by using it as a communication channel with the public.

Starting this year, CJ ENM plans to release ‘Visionary’ at the end of each year and the core keywords of the entertainment stream, which are the criteria for selection. The 10 people and entertainment stream keynote released this time will be introduced by host Song Joong-ki in the special section of ‘2020 MAMA (Mnet ASIAN MUSIC AWARDS, Mnet Asian Music Awards)’, Asia’s best music awards ceremony held non-face-to-face on the 6th.
