‘Korea Musical Awards’ Jung Young-joo “A year when there were too many cancellations and suspensions of performances, the frustration is big”

Musical actor Jung Young-joo expressed regret that the performance industry was in crisis due to COVID-19.

At 2 pm on the 21st, the ‘5th Korea Musical Awards Online Press Conference’ was held through the official YouTube channel of the Korea Musical Awards. Musical actors Kim So-hyun and Son Joon-ho served as MC, organizing committee chair Lee Yoo-ri, candidate recommendation committee chair Han Jin-seop, and actor subcommittee chair Jung Young-joo attended the panel.

The final nominations (characters) of the 5th Korea Musical Awards, selected through the nomination and review of the Candidate Recommendation Committee and online preliminary voting by experts/enthusiasts, were released at the press conference on this day.

Jung Young-joo said, “It was a year when planned performances were canceled or canceled too often. I am also practicing performances now and I have to put up a performance next year, so it doesn’t feel like anyone else’s talk.”

“When I see the audiences quarantining and filling the audience, I wonder if the solution is to close the door at all. It feels like bumping against the wall without solving it. It feels frustrating. Nevertheless, the thought that the stage should continue,” she added.

The 5th Korea Musical Awards, hosted by the Korea Musical Association and sponsored by the Arts Council Korea and Interpark Theater, is a representative event of Korean musicals and is a festival created by musicals and audiences who love musicals. It is an awards ceremony in which the musical market that has been performed during the year is settled, the flow of the market is analyzed and evaluated, and the winners are selected through fair voting by experts and enthusiasts.

The ‘Korea Musical Awards’, which started in 2016 and celebrates its fifth this year, is hoped and supported by the creatives, cast members and staff who have kept the stage even in the difficult situation in the musical market where sales decreased by more than 70% in the first half of 2020 due to the COVID-19. It is expected to revitalize the musical market in 2021.

​The 5th Korea Musical Awards will be held on January 11, 2021 at Blue Square Interpark Hall, and will be streamed in real-time online along with offline performances. In addition, in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it will be operated in compliance with the quarantine guidelines, and the progress method may be changed according to the spread of the virus.
