I like rap, and in the future, I will prepare familiar and soft rap lyrics for my mother.”
Jang Myung-jin’s mother, Kim Gyeong-hee, recalled the time of defection and said, “Because I couldn’t let my child suffer from hunger, I decided to cross the Tuman River with children. In February, the riverbank slightly melted. When I crossed the Tuman River, I went across the bank and fell into the water. A Chinese man brought Chinese bread for us, but my children ate the bread even though their pants were frozen. When I remember that time, I cry. When I was in China, I didn’t have a status, so my children couldn’t go to school and hospital. I felt sorry for losing my country. So after coming to South Korea. I am living happily now and I am grateful every moment.”
When asked about the moment he was grateful to his mother, Jang Myung-jin expressed his heartfelt feeling, saying, “I am grateful for bringing me to a free Republic of Korea when I crossed the Tuman River at the age of 12 without leaving my hand and crossing safely.”
