China’s top actor Zheng Shuang, 30, was caught up in a surrogate mother scandal, and China turned upside down.

On the 20th, local media such as Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on the Chinese version of the 2009 Chinese version of ‘Boys Over Flowers’ series and ‘Meteor Shower’, married in the U.S. in 2019, and gave birth to a son in December 2019 and a daughter in January 2020 through a surrogate mother, but they all reported that the children broke up with Zhang Heng, her ex-husband, before the children were born, and that the children were also abandoned.

Earlier on the 18th, Zhang Heng posted a photo on his Weibo showing the current status of caring for two children in the United States, saying, “It is not true that I have fled to the United States. Because I still had to protect the lives of two young children.”

An acquaintance of Zhang Heng claimed through the Chinese media that “the mothers of the two children Zhang Hung disclosed are both registered as Zheng Shuang on the birth certificate.”

He also revealed a recording of conversations between Zheng Shuang and Zhang Heng and their parents about what to do with the children who were still in the surrogate mother’s stomach. According to the transcript, the figure presumed to be Zhang Heng’s father insisted on aborting the children, while the figure presumed to be Zhang Heng’s father opposed this. It is known that the person who is presumed to be Zheng Shuang’s mother insisted on adopting the child.

On the 19th, when the surrogate mother scandal broke out, Zheng Shuang said to her Weibo on the 19th, “It was so sad and private that I didn’t want to talk in front of people, but as it was gradually released like this, I have no choice but to answer.”

“I did not violate the state’s directives in mainland China and respected all laws in foreign countries,” said Zheng Shuang.

In 2009, Zheng Shuang became a superstar with the Chinese version of the popular Korean drama ‘Boys Over Flowers’ in 2009. She also became famous as the female protagonist of ‘Love O2O’. Zheng Shuang has enjoyed great popularity, including being selected as ‘The Most Popular Top 4 Actresses Born in the 1990s’ in 2016.

When the surrogate mother scandal hit mainland China, Italian luxury brand Parada announced the end of the model contract with Zheng Shuang. In addition, British jewelry brand Laura Rose and fashion magazine Harper Bazaar immediately deleted posts related to Zheng Shuang online.

The National Newspaper Publishing Bureau of the Central Propaganda Department (hereinafter referred to as the Gwangjeon General Bureau) sent a document to each broadcasting station stating that “Zheng Shuang is registered as a problem entertainer, so please handle it so that he cannot be seen in all broadcasting programs.” It is said that she has been banned in effect.

Surrogate mothers are not illegal in China, but many local governments do not allow it. In the United States, some states allow surrogate mothers.
