Korean production of the musical “Chicago,” which marks its 21st anniversary this year, unveiled a cast that coexists classical and novelty.
The musical “Chicago” made its debut in Korea 21 years ago on December 8, 2000. The musical “Chicago,” which was launched in Korea as a license production, has been performed as a Rafflica production (the same type of performance as an original production) since 2007, and has been at the top of the Korean musical for 20 years since then. The work, which has accumulated 1,146 performances and an average audience share of 90% over the past 15 seasons over the past 20 years, has continued its success story beyond last season’s record.
“In the summer of 2020, an open audition was held for the 21st anniversary of the musical ‘Chicago’ Korean production. In particular, this audition was the first audition that included the roles of ‘Belma’, ‘Roxy’ and ‘Billy’, which have been selected privately so far, and it was a time to give a fresh breeze to the musical ‘Chicago’.
Through the audition, 22 actors including Yoon Gong-ju (as Belma Kelly), Tiffany Young, Min Kyung-ah (as Roxy Hart), Park Gun-hyung and Choi Jae-rim (as Billy Flynn) were selected through a fierce process.
Together with existing members Choi Jung-won, Ivy, Kim Young-joo, Kim Kyung-sun, S.J. Kim, and Cha Jung-hyun, they will be responsible for performing the musical “Chicago” in 2021.
“It was a time when we were able to confirm that the level of actors was very high,” said staff at home and abroad who oversaw the audition. The ensembles, the flowers of this work, are joined by actors who have been together for several seasons, new actors, and actors who have been away from Chicago for a while and are making a comeback. They expect to add attractive new energy on the “Chicago” stage along with the best “Belma,” “Roxy” and “Billy,” expressing confidence in casting the musical “Chicago” in 2021.
The musical “Chicago” is a revival of the musical by director Walter Bobby and choreographer Ann Rain King in 1996, after it was first staged by Bob Facy, the mythical presence of the musical in 1975. It has been performed more than 9,690 times in 24 years on Broadway, making it the longest-running American musical in Broadway history.
The musical also won 55 awards at the world’s most prestigious awards, including Tony, Drama Desk, and the Olivier Awards, and was recognized for his work. The musical “Chicago” is a steady-selling musical that has been performed more than 32,500 times in more than 500 cities in 36 countries around the world, including the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany and Japan, and has been watched by more than 33 million people.
