‘Joseon Exorcist’ was engulfed in controversy over history distortion.

On the 22nd, while SBS’s Monday and Tuesday drama ‘Joseon Exorcist’ (play Park Gye-ok, director Shin Kyung-soo) was broadcast for the first time, viewers are continuing to point out that it has distorted the history.

‘Joseon Exorcist’ is a Korean exorcism fantasy depicting the bloody fight of humans to protect the people and evil spirits who try to devour the Joseon by using human desires. In the first broadcast, the Joseon Dynasty was in crisis due to Azazelle’s resurrection, while Chungnyeong Daegun (played by Jang Dong-yoon) took the command of Taejong (played by Gam Woo-seong) to pick up John (Dalsey Parquet), a bride of Exorcist.

However, in the process, John’s interpreter Marco (played by Seo Dong-won) asked Chungnyeong Daegun to treat him at a gisaeng house, and the gisaeng house they visited was filled with Chinese meals such as mooncakes and pidan, raising doubts. In addition, it was depicted that Taejong murdered the people recklessly while watching the illusion of Lee Seong-gye.

Immediately after the broadcast, viewers posted on the viewer’s bulletin board of ‘Joseon Exorcist’, “Bang-won Lee murdered the people recklessly and this makes sense. Is it possible to distort the actual figures of Joseon, Taejong, and Sejong, and the times of that time?”, “There are mooncakes in the Gisaeng House of Joseon, and even Chinese liquor in Pidan. Also, the missionaries speak a little to the king. No matter how much drama should be done, he pointed out, “I think it’s a Chinese Exorcist, not a Joseon Exorcist”. Some viewers also requested that the broadcast be stopped.

This is not the first time that writer Park Gye-ok, who wrote ‘Joseon Exorcist’, has been controversial over history distortion. Writer Park Gye-ok was controversial that he caricatured Joseon with lines such as “The Annals of the Joseon Dynasty is just a tabloid” and “How long I have to dance Jongmyo Jaeryeak” in his previous tvN drama “Mr Queen”. ‘Joseon Exorcist’ is also in a situation where the controversy over history distortion is inevitable as the actual characters and times became the background of the work.

‘Joseon Exorcist’ has been receiving fierce protests from viewers since the first broadcast. It is noteworthy what position the production crew will present in the controversy over history distortion.
