The military trial of Seungri (real name Lee Seung-hyun, 31), a former member of the group Big Bang, is nearing the end.
Seung-ri’s trial has been in the process of interrogating witnesses for eight months since it first began on Sept. 16 last year. As Seung-ri’s charges are so diverse and Seung-ri is reluctant to adopt evidence for the newspaper report presented by the prosecution, the court has adopted dozens of witnesses to determine whether he actually committed a crime or not.
Many of the women at entertainment establishments who were called to the scene at the time of the incident were present, and witnesses related to embezzlement and special assault teachers also attended the court in person to make statements on Seungri’s charges. In particular, retired celebrities such as Jung Joon-young and Choi Jong-hoon who participated in the “8-member group chat room” were also escorted from local prisons to attend and made statements.
The questioning of witnesses for the victory trial was at the last stage and was held on the 17th. The 19th trial was held at the General Military Court of the Ground Operations Command in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, earlier in the day, and questioned witnesses who had been asked to attend but were absent for various reasons.
The court plans to wrap up the trial in the first half of the year by combining claims from prosecutors and lawyers and statements from witnesses present. The trial is expected to continue until June as procedures such as interrogation and sentencing of the accused remain.
Seungri was accused of being a key figure in the Gangnam club Burning Sun scandal in February 2019, and was indicted without detention early last year after 17 police investigations. Seung-ri is accused of violating the Special Act on prostitution, prostitution, sexual violence, etc., habitual gambling, violation of the Foreign Exchange Transaction Act, violation of the Food Sanitation Act, embezzlement of duties, and aggravated punishment of certain economic crimes, and special assault teachers.
Seungri joined the military in March last year and began a military trial as a private. He was promoted to corporal in December last year, and is scheduled to be discharged in September.
Seungri is known to be serving faithfully as an active soldier, with the “exemplary soldier” sign being detected at the beginning of the trial. However, as the military trial related to Burning Sun takes up a significant portion of his military career, he is expected to remain as a blank in his active career.
